After 19 years in the retail footwear industry, Dulcie decided it was time to retire and put the business up for sale. As they were contemplating their next steps, their middle son, Andrew, was interested in purchasing a business. Growing up immersed in the shoe business, Andrew had spent countless hours at the shop as a child and also as a young adult where he worked in the store while pursuing his business degree.

After numerous discussions, Andrew and wife, Sheree, made the bold decision to buy the business from Dulcie. Sheree, who had carved out a successful career in the jewellery industry, were about to embark on a new adventure as business owners. Coupled with the fact they also had a six- month-old baby it was undeniably a whirlwind of emotions and challenges. In those early days they often thought “What were we thinking?!”

Dulcie remained actively involved, mentoring Andrew and imparting her extensive knowledge of the business. Three years later, Sheree joined the team, bringing her own professional expertise to the mix.

The attached photo captures a moment in 2003, showcasing both the past and present owners of Suna Shoes. During this time, Hush Puppies was a prominent brand, and promotions featuring the iconic mascot dog were a hit, always attracting a crowd.

This transition period symbolizes the enduring legacy of Suna Shoes and the seamless blend of tradition and innovation as the baton was passed down to the next generation.

In 1984, Dulcie Burns (nee Suna) embarked on a journey that would change her life and the shoe industry in Toowoomba forever. While traveling through Toowoomba, Dulcie stumbled upon a vacant shop on Ruthven St. As fate would have it, the neighbouring menswear shop was the landlord and an instant connection between the two resulted in a signed lease within 24 hours. Dulcie’s husband, John, was caught completely off guard by her impulsive decision to open a shoe store. In an industry dominated by men, John was skeptical and less than thrilled about Dulcie’s bold venture.

Dulcie was undeterred. With a relentless drive and a knack for sales, she dove headfirst into the business, quickly establishing Suna Shoes as the go-to destination for footwear in Toowoomba. Her passion and dedication were evident in every aspect of the business. Dulcie would often turn up on “Coffee Break“ a TV morning show, promoting Suna Shoes. The store became renowned for its extensive range of sizes, catering to everyone from size 5 to 12.

Dulcie’s vision and determination propelled Suna Shoes to success in Toowoomba. Her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance, passion, and believing in oneself against all odds.
